The great Mexican artist Diego Rivera was asked to paint the walls of its classical Garden Court of the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1932; despite his socialist themes, he had become the great modern muralist. This panel of the mural portrays the vast factory Ford built on the Rouge River in Dearborn near Detroit (the whole mural was funded by the Ford Motor Company).
